Indoor Trees
By: HGTV

If you're planning to dress up your decor with plants, don't forget to consider trees. They can be such a delightful and unexpected choice. Plus, indoor trees are easy to care for and provide big results with little work. Consider some of the following plants to get your home growing:

Providing a classic look to any room, the African fern pine displays thin leathery leaves that thrive in full sun to light shade. Tolerant of almost any soil, African fern pines are as easy to care for as they are good-looking.

A striped dracena creates a striking accent in low- to medium-light spaces. Choose a soil that both retains water yet drains well. Apply a granular, slow-release fertilizer annually in the spring, or fertilize monthly with a water-soluble fertilizer. If you mist your indoor plants, make sure to use distilled water.

For an unusual conversation piece, try the coffee tree. The coffee tree grows well indoors and will actually bear coffee beans. The coffee tree does best in bright, indirect sunlight like an east or west-facing window. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring and keep the soil evenly moist with warm water.

The fishtail palm is named for its fish-shaped foliage. While the fishtail palm is an excellent choice for growing indoors, it requires weekly watering to prevent drying out. Look closely at the edges of the leaves to determine if the palm is suffering from lack of water.

Neanthe bella palms, also referred to as parlor palms, are popular indoor trees because they create a lush burst of foliage under bright, indirect light conditions. These palms are susceptible to spider mites along the undersides of the foliage. Simply spray the foliage with insecticidal soap to get rid of any pests.
