12/11/04- “An African American Christmas Celebration”

On Saturday, Dec. 11 from 5 - 7 p.m. the Beach Institute will present “An African American Christmas Celebration.” The event will feature well known Savannah vocalist Huxsie Scott, Sankofa’s junior dance troupe, the St. Paul CME Church’s Youth & Young Adult Choir and seasonal holiday folklore from the Gullah Geechee tradition, along with glittering holiday decorations and delicious holiday desserts and beverages.

The “African American Christmas Celebration” is part of the Beach Institute’s new monthly Performance Series showcasing African and African-inspired performances by Savannah artists. Huxsie Scott is considered one of the best jazz and blues artists in the Coastal Empire. Currently the featured vocalist the Savannah Theatre’s production of “Jukebox Journey,” Ms. Scott is also the Bronze Medal winner of the 2004 American Traditions Vocal Competition and was the featured vocalist in the popular musical, “Lost in the Fifties.” She was a featured opener for late jazz great Lionel Hampton and McCoy Tyner.

Other performers will add to the celebration of the season and African traditions. The Sankofa dance troupe is an affirmation and celebration of African American culture, and their creative blend of modern hip hop, African, and jazz dance rhythms generates exciting, energetic performances. The presentation of Gullah Geechee holiday folklore will provide a rare opportunity for Savannahians to experience and enjoy these traditions and tales.

“An African American Christmas Celebration” is free and open to all. The Beach Institute is located at the corner of Price and Harris Streets. For more information call (912) 234-8000. Photos of the artists and other relevant graphics are available.
